Denise opened the door with a cautious smile, hoping the face on the other side was familiar and friendly. As the door creaked open, she was met by her neighbor, Mrs. Hargrove, who looked frazzled and anxious. Her silver hair was tousled, and her brow was lined with worry.
“Denise! I had to come—couldn’t wait any longer,” Mrs. Hargrove whispered urgently, glancing around as if the walls had ears. “It’s about Maddy. They’re looking for her!”
Denise’s heart sank. Fear flooded her veins, but there was something in Mrs. Hargrove’s eyes that kept her grounded. “What do you mean? I thought she was safe at home,” Denise said, her voice barely above a whisper.
“There was a tip-off. They know she posted the photo! We need to hide her…” Mrs. Hargrove’s voice trembled as she spoke, urgency deepening in her tone.
Denise felt the weight of the decision press against her chest. Should she risk everything to help her sister, or send Mrs. Hargrove away to keep herself safe?
