Caroline stepped back outside, the crisp air wrapping around her like a protective cloak. The chatter and laughter faded into a muffled hum as she leaned against the cool brick wall, taking a moment to breathe.
“I can’t do this,” she muttered under her breath, feeling tears prick at the corners of her eyes. Just as she was about to turn away, the sound of approaching footsteps caught her attention. A tall girl with curly hair came out, noticing Caroline’s distress.
“Hey, you okay?” the girl asked, her voice gentle. Caroline realized this might be an opportunity to connect, but her nerves held her back. The girl offered a reassuring smile and added, “It’s really fun in there! We all felt nervous on our first day, too.”
Caroline could feel a flicker of hope igniting within her. Should she muster the courage to explain her fears, or would it be safer to just thank the girl and retreat further into her shell?
